The penguin is a flightless black and white sea bird belonging a family (Spheniscidae) of which there are 17 species occuring on cold coasts of the southern hemisphere. They are adapted to aquatic life, having wings reduced to narrow flippers giving fast propulsion when chasing fish or squid and when escaping predators. Penguins range between 40-120cm long, they have dense plumage enabling them to tolerate extreme cold, penguins are extremely sociable and often migrate long distances inland to nest in rookeries.

Emperor and King penguins make no nest but protect and incubate the single egg by carrying it in the down feathers between the feet and the body. Other species brood in the usual way and may lay as many as three eggs.

*

I’d never heard a penguin whistle

till one fell upon a thistle

his whistle was shrill

because he had in his bill

the remains of his good wife’s rissole

*

I knew an old penguin from Shelbourne

whose face was regrettably forlorn

his wife ran away

I’m sorry to say

and left him with a heart that was torn

*

You’ll usually find with a penguin

that his outlook on life is quite sanguine

for why should he mope?

when there’s always the hope

he will find the right crowd which to hang in

*

You will never see a penguin’s willy

for where he lives, it’s far too chilly

the most you’ll ever see

is where he had a pee

the snow is shades of piccalilli
